One Week

I finally took Big Boy to the pediatric ENT on Monday so we could get to the root of the never ending cycle of ear infections and strep throat.   Well. the appointment was Monday and the surgery to have his tonsils and adenoids removed is a week from today.  Holy fast Batman!  Never once did it cross my mind when we walked in there Monday morning, would we leave with a surgery date being nine days away.

It's been an interesting few weeks to say the least.  In addition to the ENT, Big Boy has started seeing a new Pediatrician.  I just couldn't handle his old Pediatric Group anymore.  The practice was too big and I was tired of seeing a nurse practitioner EVERY SINGLE TIME we went there.  They told me I could see an ENT whenever I wanted and the first time I call for the referral, they gave me a hard time.  SEE YA!   We switched to a new practitioner who has a solo practice which translates to a doctor who will know Big Boy and not try to pass him off on everyone else in the practice.   She is fantastic and we have seen more progress with her in two weeks then the entire amount of time we were with the old practice.

Unfortunately, we have to cancel Big Boys appointment at the Specialized Hospital on the 8th because his surgery is the day before.  This is a real bummer since it takes so long to get an appointment there but like I mentioned earlier, I think the ENT would have removed his tonsils that day if he could have, ya know?  It seems like we are forever at doctor appointments lately but at least we'll get them out of the way before the summer comes.

Lastly, Big Boy is about to age out of the Pre-school Autistic program and at the recommendation of his teacher, we will be MAINSTREAMING him next year!   Yup yup yup, you read that correctly, Big Boy will be mainstreamed for part of kindergarten and will spend the other part of the day receiving speech and occupational therapy.  He's doing so well and  barely qualifies for services at this point but there is no way I will give them up.   The real indicator will be how he fairs in kindy because if I give up his rights to services and he can't handle a mainstream kindy, I'll never get him back in the program and then I just don't know what will happen.

So.....this is what's going on at the beach these days.  Everything revolves around Big Boy ( as usual) and once we get through the surgery next week we will be able to focus on his kindy placement and what  type of curriculum we can build specifically for him.   I think this blog entry may be the longest I've sat down and relaxed in the last week.

Two More Sleeps.....

Is what Big Boy keeps keeps saying, 2 more sleeps before I go back to school and see all of my friends!  Thanks Heavens!  I don't think I have it in me to handle this child much longer.  Big Boy is a creature of habit  and we thrive on a schedule around here.  It's time to get back to normalcy.

Due to extreme budget cuts in NJ, our school system had to do some fancy maneuvering and the end result was new bus schedules and starting times for all the schools.  This actual benefits my parents who will have him less time in the afternoon but puts me in quite the time crunch in regards to getting BB dropped off in the morning and getting myself to work on time.  Ah, it'll all come together.

Another issue for BB is going to be his friends.  Two of his closest friends have gone on to kindy and another has switched schools.  We've been talking about this a little bit each day but I just don't think he "gets it."  He is however jumping out of his skin thinking about seeing his favorite teachers especially one he has a huge crush on and has missed so much all summer:)

We have a very busy day today of back to school clothes shopping and haircuts!  Let's all say a prayers for a great school year!

Back to School for Big Boy!

It's that time again and BB is all set to head back to school tomorrow!  I can't believe how fast the summer has gone.  His clothes are all layed out and his lunch is packed.  I've labeled his lunch box and backpack, now the only thing that can go wrong is if BB decides to have a meltdown when I drop him off in the morning.  So far he seems really excited.  He will be returning to his "regular" classroom with his teachers from last year (thank goodness) and we are going back to our old routine of me driving him in.  The school bus was too overwhelming in the morning and this way allows us a few extra minutes of "what if " time.  Lord knows we can always use a few extra minutes when it comes to getting out of the house in the morning.

So wish us luck and let's all hope Big Boy has a smooth transition and falls nicely back in to the swing of things.  Personally, I'm ready to get back to the school year routine.  BB does best on a schedule and his days are extremely regimented this way.  I still can't get over he is already starting his second year in this program.  I swear it seems like only last week we were still trying to get him enrolled.   Time really does slip away...

Quite the Conundrum

I think I have mentioned that Big Boy has his first real field trip tomorrow at school. They are all going to Chuck E. Cheese. Since I found out about the trip I have been planning on going but, as the trip gets closer, my anxiety builds. I am terribly worried about how BB will behave it I'm there. I am so worried about him acting up because I'm going to be there and I don't want his trip to be spoiled.

On the other hand, I really don't want to miss his first field trip. I have gotten a lot of excellent advice on what to do and it's no secret that kids do tend to act out when you put school and parents in the same equation. I spoke with his teacher earlier and she completely understands my anxiety and suggested maybe I just stop by for a few minutes to say hi. Now, a normal kid may get upset when they see their parent leave. Not my kid. He'll get upset thinking I'm there to take him home which won't be the case, and I dare you to try to explain that to an already over stimulated three year old. No really, I dare you.

So, here I sit wondering what to do. I feel like if I go, I 'll be setting him up to fail. I feel like if I don't go, he'll be wondering where Mommy is? Damn.

The Big Day

Well, this is the first of many. Today is Big Boy's pe-k evaluation. Since he will be three the end of this month he is being considered for pre-k due to his speech delay. I am a nervous wreck. I know we are doing what is best for him but I am tired of people passing judgement on my son. Among one of my worries is the fact he isn't potty trained. He just has no interest in the potty. We have tried a few things to peak his curiosity and nothing has worked.

Luckily, hubby is coming with us to the evaluation today. I just don't think I was able to do it alone. The thought of being in a room with five other people besides us, who are there strictly to pass judgement on us has be on my way straight into a panic attack. I am already getting shaky just typing this.

I just want what is best for BB. I know he will do wonderfully once he is in school with other kids. We are very fortunate for where we live because the public school system is excellent and so far the people who I have spoken to genuinely seem to care about BB and his future education. So wish us luck and pray there are no breakdowns in the near future.
